"This is tough to talk about" - An Evening with Nastya Stanko

29. November 2023

We were happy to welcome editor-in-chief of Slidstvo (a Ukrainian investigative outlet)Nastya Stanko, as part of our Munich Dialogues on Democracy Speaker Series at Amerikahaus.

Nastya Stanko is one of Ukraine's premier war correspondents.

On Wednesday, November 29, 2023, she discussed her experiences as a Ukrainian citizen and as a journalist in Ukraine during the ongoing war in her home country, together with fellow journalist Joshua Yaffa. Stanko described the difficulties of combining her parental and professional duties during a time of war and covering the war while friends are fighting and dying in the war. She also provided insight into the sentiment of the Ukrainian people who experience shame, fatigue, and significant losses. Furthermore, the journalist pointed out that international support for Ukraine is an essential part of winning the war and preserving democracy among all European countries.

After the discussion with Joshua Yaffa and Nastya Stanko, we invited the audience and the speakers to join us and the Yale Club of Germany to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the Munich Dialogues on Democracy Speakers Series, a cooperation between the Yale Club of Germany e.V. (Munich Chapter) and us, Amerikahaus–Bavarian Center for Transatlantic Relations.

Visit the Munich Dialogues on Democracy Website to learn more about the speakers series.

We want to thank Nastya Stanko, Joshua Yaffa, and our partners, the Yale Club of Germany and Bard College Berlin, for this insightful evening. Another thank you to our supporter, the Federal Foreign Office, and everyone who joined us at Amerikahaus or online!
