Confrontation or Cooperation? Rethinking Defense in a Post-Conventional Global Order

Saturday, Feb 19, 9:30 a.m.; Saturday, Feb 19, 11:30 a.m.; Sunday, Feb 20, 11:30 a.m.

This is an official side event on the occasion of the Munich Security Conference 2022.

NATO, as an alliance of independent European and Northern American countries, has played a tremendously impactful role in world affairs in the post WW2-order. It uniquely links the strengths and values of the two continents, enabling them to cooperate on defense and security issues and to conduct joint multinational crisis management operations. In a world of hybrid a post-conventional warfare, NATO has to find new and innovative solutions to maintain its members' security. This also calls for a closer cooperation with the European Union, as many of the challenges can only be solved through joint forces.

Participants will take on the role of a minister of defense in the North Atlantic Council (NAC), NATO's highest decision-making body. Faced with a crisis situation, the group will have to reach a consensus among NATO’s member states, and commit to various decisions made in the form of resolutions - all of this within a set timeframe. The event will provide you with first-hand experience on the decision-making process within NATO and educates on the chances and challenges of bringing different perspectives together.

The event will take place in three sessions:
Session 1: Saturday, February 19, 2022, 9:30 a.m.
Session 2: Saturday, February 19, 2022, 11:30 a.m.
Session 3: Sunday, February 20, 2022, 11:30 a.m.
