On the occasion of the Munich Security Conference (MSC) 2023, we offered a Youth Hub in cooperation with the MSC and its valued partners from February 16 through February 19, 2023 at the Amerikahaus. We were pleased to welcome not only interested individuals, but also high-ranking international politicians and security experts.

Among others were Claudia Roth, Minister of State for Culture and Media, and David Van Weel, Deputy Secretary General for Emerging Security Challenges of NATO, as well as Radoslaw Sikorski, a member of the European Parliament, as well as a former Secretary of State and Minister of Defense for the Republic of Poland, Jürgen Ehle, Rear Admiral of the German Armed Forces and Military Advisor to the Acting Director CSDP of the European External Action Service (EEAS), Roderich Kiesewetter MdB, the Special Representative to the Committee on Foreign Affairs and Deputy Chairman of the Parliamentary Control Panel, Dr. Claudia Major, Head of Research Group at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP), Prof. Carlo Masala, Head of the Department of International Politics at the University of the Bundeswehr Munich, and Philip von Haehling, Head of the German, Austrian, and Swiss Public Sector for Amazon Web Service.

These politicians and specialists discussed current security and geopolitical issues with the audience. Their debate focused on the war in Ukraine, the West's tense relations to Russia and China, the role of NATO and the EU, technological warfare, misinformation, the Global South, and data security.

We are particularly happy about the lively interest and engagement of the young adults present at the Youth Hub as co-organizers, listeners and participants of the events, as well as  the speakers, who stimulated lively and constructive discussions with their informative presentations.

We would like to extend our gratitude to all speakers, contributors, and partner organizations that assisted us in organizing this event.

The following is an overview of the course of the weekend and formats during the MSC Youth Hub.

On Saturday morning, high-ranking individuals such as Prof. Carlo Masala (Head of the Chair for International Politics at the University of the German Armed Forces in Munich) and Dr. Claudia Major (Head of Research Group at the Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik) discussed the role of the German Armed Forces in relation to the increasingly escalating situation in Europe at our event, "The Future Role of the Bundeswehr for the German Security System in view of the National Security Strategy," which took place in cooperation with the Jungen Gesellschaft für Sicherheitspolitik (Junge GSP). Additionally, this relationship was further elaborated upon during the panel discussion, #WarTok - (Social) Media as a Game-Changer in Warfare: What Kind of Warrior Are You? which was organized by the Amerikahaus together with the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, the Altstipendiaten der Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung and the MSC , during which Roderich Kiesewetter MdB (Special Representative to the Committee on Foreign Affairs and Vice-Chairman of the Parliamentary Control Panel), among others, talked about the relationship of social media to the spreading of information in a military and political context. This year, the Amerikahaus was the unique broadcasting venue of All Quiet on the Western Front. Together with Netflix and the MSC, the film, which has won four Academy Awards®, was screened on Saturday evening. The war epic is set during the First World War and addresses the horrors and brutality of war – a topic that is ever so relevant today due to the current and highly-publicized war in Ukraine. Claudia Roth, Minister of State for Culture and Media, provided a prologue to the audience before the special film screening.
