Researching America: An Evening with Our Fellowship Alumni

Wednesday, March 13, 2024, 7 p.m.

Excellent scholarship requires opportunities: opportunities to access resources firsthand, to engage in conversations with renowned colleagues from the research field, and to expand one’s horizon. For emerging scholars working on topics related to the United States or transatlantic relations, going abroad is essential, yet often difficult to realize without external funding. Travel grants and fellowships are a crucial means of support to this end. But what exactly are the practical benefits of a fellowship? How do fellowships help emerging scholars to grow professionally and personally? And what career paths may they open up, in and beyond academia?

Three fellowship alumni will come together at Amerikahaus to provide glimpses into their own experiences, speaking about the research they have conducted, the value of going abroad, as well as the impact of the fellowship on their further career. All of them are recipients of the AGBC-Travel Grant, a fellowship awarded by the American German Business Club Munich and the Bavarian American Academy (BAA) that enables emerging scholars to conduct research in the United States.

The event is jointly organized by the AGBC Munich and the BAA. The AGBC Munich provides a well-rounded business networking platform with strong contacts to the Munich area American, German, and international business communities. Together with the BAA, the AGBC has been awarding AGBC Travel Grants to emerging scholars since 2019.

The discussion will be moderated by Constanze Sabathil, President of AGBC Munich, and Volker Depkat, Board Member of the BAA and Professor of American Studies at the University of Regensburg.

Milena Rinck graduated with an M.A. in American History, Culture, and Society from Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich. In her master’s thesis, she analyzed forms of acculturation in the exile lives of German-Jewish writers Mascha Kaléko and Lion Feuchtwanger, the results of which have been published by EXIL VERLAG. She is currently pursuing her PhD at the Amerika-Institut at LMU under the supervision of Professor Klaus Benesch. In her project, Milena Rinck examines the concepts of culture conveyed in Germany's Foreign Cultural Relations and Educational Policy in the United States by contrasting its theoretical objectives developed by the German Foreign Office with the cultural program work implemented by commissioned, independent German cultural institutions in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles. Simultaneously, she has been working at transatlantic cultural institutions in Germany and the United States, including the Leo Baeck Institute New York I Berlin and Villa Aurora and Thomas Mann House in Los Angeles and Berlin.
