November 3, 2020 is election day. Not only the next president of the United States, but also all of the members of the House of Representatives, a third of the senators and many others are being chosen. The elections take place at a time of deep political, ideological and cultural division. Polarization and partisanship have grown in the recent past, in part because of the election of Donald Trump. But it would be wrong to blame it all on the 45th president. What can be observed today began long before Trump, and it will not end with his presidency, whether he will be re-elected or not.

This lecture will put a main focus on the American political system, arguing that in order to truly understand many of the current problems it is necessary to take a deeper, historical look at the Constitution and the way U.S. political structures have changed and developed, the constraints they impose as well as the opportunities for reform.

Speaker: Dr. Andreas Etges, LMU Munich

Organizer: Bavarian Center for Transatlantic Relations

Contact: Sarah Martin
