Some Americans cling to the myth that we are living in a post-racial society, that the election of the first Black president spelled the doom of racism. In fact, racist thought is alive in America. In this narrative, Kendi chronicles the entire story of anti-Black racist ideas and their staggering power over the course of American history. He shows how and why some of our leading proslavery and pro-civil rights thinkers have challenged racist ideas in America. In shedding light on the history, Kendi's book Stamped from the Beginning offers us the tools we need to expose them - and gives us reason to hope.
Ibram X. Kendi is professor of History and International Relations and the founding director of the Antiracist Research and Policy Center at American University. His second book, Stamped from the Beginning, won the 2016 National Book Award for Nonfiction. After working as a journalist Kendi earned his doctoral degree in African American Studies from Temple University. He has published fourteen essays in books and academic journals, including The Journal of African American History, Journal of Social History and many more. He is currently working on his next book, How To Be An Antiracist, which will be published in 2019.
