This lecture is part of our event series US-Wahlen 2020

For more than 150 years, African Americans have regarded their right to vote as one of the most important tools to obtain more justice and equality. However, even though the 15th Amendment of the US Constitution (1870) prohibited excluding anyone from voting on account of “race, color or previous condition of servitude”, white supremacists in the US South were able to disenfranchise almost all black citizens in their states until the mid-1960s. Much progress has been made since then, and the success of black political empowerment includes the election of Barack Obama in 2008. However, significant barriers to full parity of African Americans still persist and contribute to continuing racial inequality to this day. The lecture will examine causes and manifestations of this development as well as the significance of the black vote for the upcoming election in November 2020.
