In his series Displaced, German visual artist Jens Schwarz explores the topic of migration during the so called 'refugee crisis', a peak period in terms of numbers, in Germany between September 2015 and April 2016. Schwarz' inquiry is devoted to displaced migrants, which he photographed upon their arrival, notably in Munich and the Bavarian border crossings, and records different stages of hope and despair throughout a journey towards an anticipated, improved future. The work also reflects on authorities' interventions, administrative responses and social interaction within our fragmented contemporary society. The exhibition, held at the Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, from September 20th through to the end of October, is curated by Valentine Umansky, and comprised of photographic prints, video, and a newspaper publication, which includes prints and various texts collected from both media-sources and the artist's personal archives.
Jens Schwarz, born 1968 in Berlin, studied art history in Paris and photography in Munich.
As a visual artist and photographer he works in the field of documentary on personal artistic projects and international editorial assignments. In his work, he focuses on sociopolitical issues that often deal with questions of both the individual and social identity. His projects received several grants and his work has been nominated among others for the Henri-Nannen-Prize and showcased at Les Rencontres de la Photographie in Arles.
This transatlantic project was initiated in recognition of the 30th anniversary of the sister city partnership of Munich and Cincinnati, Ohio.
The exhibition is co-produced by Amerikahaus Munich and is part of the Year of German-American Friendship 2018/2019 (Deutschlandjahr USA) which is a collaborative initiative funded by the German Federal Foreign Office, implemented by the Goethe-Institut, and supported by The Federation of German Industries (BDI).
