American Exceptionalism: History of a Concept

Teacher seminar / Registration fee: €10 / Please register via registration form

American Exceptionalism, as Byron Shafer argued in his 1991 collected volume Is America Different?, is the "notion that the United States was created differently, developed differently, and thus has to be understood differently – essentially on its own terms and within its own contexts." Instead of pursuing the rather sterile question of whether the U.S. indeed is, was, or has been exceptional, the seminar will approach American Exceptionalism as a "metaconcept" (Don E. Pease), asking why, how, when, by whom, and to what effects the U.S. was imagined as exceptional in the course of its history. As such, the class will outline the major trajectories of the conceptual history of American Exceptionalism from its colonial and revolutionary beginnings to the present.
