The Amerikahaus Abroad – the EAIE Conference in Helsinki

Rachel Steinhaus, from our Education and Exchange Department, recently travelled to Helsinki to take part in the European Association for International Education (EAIE) annual conference.

The conference offers international educators from across the globe and especially Europe the opportunity to learn best practices on all aspects of international education – from attracting students to their university to integrating international students on campus to sending their own students to study abroad. With over 6,000 attendees, the conference also made for a great opportunity to meet with institutional partners to touch base on existing partnerships and explore potential new ones.

Together with 4 other EducationUSA advisors from across Europe, Rachel assisted the American universities in attendance make the most of their conference. In a half-day workshop, Rachel spoke about trends in our region and generally what attracts Europeans to study in the U.S. Rachel spoke particularly about the increased interest in short term programs, be it semester-long university exchanges, a yearlong experience as a free mover, or an intensive English language course. In addition to her presentation, Rachel staffed the EducationUSA booth in the Expo Hall, facilitating meetings between universities and expanding her own knowledge of programs available to German students. She also had the opportunity to take part in various sessions which left her inspired for her future work back at the Amerikahaus.

It was an honor to be selected to represent the efforts of the Amerikahaus and EducationUSA in Germany. Rachel is looking forward to bringing new ideas to her advising work and continuing to help in the education of the world’s global citizens.

We are an official EducationUSA Center and part of the U.S. Department of State network of over 400 international student advising centers in more than 170 countries.  The network promotes U.S. higher education to students around the world about opportunities to study at accredited postsecondary institutions in the United States.
