About the Winter School on Transatlantic Trade and Security
During this Winter School, "NATO at 75 and Beyond - Challenges and Opportunities for a New Leadership," we will discuss the following topics and develop ideas on how to ensure the future success of the transatlantic partnership in order to create resilience for western democracies.
The central issues will include: How can member countries within NATO prepare themselves for the outcomes of the 2024 elections in Europe and the U.S.? How can the idea of NATO and the transatlantic partnership as a pivotal means of securing European and U.S. interests in the future global order be promoted? How can countries foster knowledge about the importance of NATO as a national security pillar among the publics of member countries by countering disinformation?
An important goal of the Winter School is not only to deepen participants’ knowledge in relation to NATO and the transatlantic partnership, but also to critically rethink the conditions under which NATO and its member countries can peacefully flourish. Accordingly, we expect participants to come well prepared and willing to challenge their own perspectives on the topic. To ensure that we reach the correct audience, we will establish an application process, where prospective participants must prove their eligibility and capacity to fruitfully contribute to the Winter School. Accepted registrants will receive material to prepare for the Winter School. Furthermore, participants are expected to form groups and carve out working theses on how to make the transatlantic relationship more resilient.
Who can participate?
We invite young people under 30 years of age with differing regional backgrounds – particularly from both sides of the Atlantic – to join us for this Winter School. Each participant should have some experience, interest, or study focus in security politics and connected issues. Participants should be willing to challenge their positions in light of different arguments. We strongly encourage people from NATO member countries to participate but also welcome applications from countries close to the Eastern border of EU/NATO. We particularly invite women to apply and aim for at least a 50% rate of female participation. The maximum number of attendees is 35.
Why apply to the Winter School?
This Winter School is an excellent opportunity to not only develop your perspectives on the future of the transatlantic partnership and provides a great opportunity to get in touch with leading experts in the topical field. Furthermore, you will receive a certificate for your successful participation.
Last but not least, you will have the opportunity to develop the ideas delineated in the Winter School and introduce them to the audiences at the official Munich Security Conference side events at MSC@amerikahaus. This is an excellent way to bring youth-driven impulses to the international security politics community.
