"Pygmalion" - Guest Event

Thursday, February 08, 2024, through Friday, February 09, 2024, each at 11 a.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Pygmalion is a masterpiece of English (or Irish) theater literature. Shaw explores complex themes with a lightness of touch, warmth and humor. Professor Higgins is both a misogynistic monster and a relentless pursuer of truth in a world of moral hypocrisy and first-class snobbery. His attempts to turn the poor flower seller, Eliza, into a duchess by day are both a triumph and a personal disaster; the unmarried professor becomes addicted and begins to like his student, while the student surpasses her teacher and arrives not exactly at understanding society, but at the role of women in that society. Eliza is an excellent creation, a proto-feminist in a misogynistic age (and what has changed?) and a first-class warrior who does not arrest prisoners but achieves everything with a smile.Indeed, this play is full of wise women and silly men, which in the world of' 'hash tag Me Too' is a good place to start a play.

TNT Theatre, directed by Paul Stebbings, transforms this script from a mountain of words into a dynamic and action-packed social comedy. The music and especially dance and stylized movement create an accessible and fast-paced comedy. The dance of words is transformed into the dance of life and the audience is taken into a dizzying whirlwind of laughter, love, madness and wisdom.

In the hundred years since George Bernard Shaw wrote Pygmalion, the world has changed because our values have changed (and largely for the better). Pygmalion not only reflects that change with humor and poise, but is also part of that change. The play rightly remains one of the most performed and popular pieces of theatrical literature since Shakespeare.

The play will be performed in English by the American Drama Group Europe.
