Autonomy versus Efficiency: What if the EU Sacrifices its Dream of an Autonomous Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) for Reliable Security? – Hybrid Event

Friday, February 17, 2023, 6:30 p.m.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was a wake-up call for the transatlantic security community. Years of empty buzzwords, promises, and short-sighted strategy decisions left NATO and EU’s CFSP brain dead. Both are in desperate need of a Zeitenwende.

The world witnesses a return to hard security approaches, realizing that being a normative power is not enough. At the same time, NATO also faces internal disunity due to clashing national visions. Can the CFSP actually ever be strategically autonomous? Is it not the perfect time to abandon its pipe dream and refocus on deepening EU-NATO cooperation and transatlantic integration? In light of fragile political landscapes, would it even be possible to stop treating both as a two-edged sword and making out of two brain dead security providers one efficient actor? The event sheds a new light on conflicting national visions and develops innovative avenues for rethinking transatlantic to-do lists in the 21st century.
