Donald Trump is a symptom, not the cause of the trouble experienced by the United States.  The talk takes us back to basic democratic principles and argues that we need to understand what has gone wrong with the two institutions which, ever since the 19th century, have been considered crucial for making representative democracy work: political parties and free media.  A number of concrete ways to rethink and re-design these institutions are offered.

Jan-Werner Mueller is Roger Williams Straus Professor of Social Sciences Professor of Politics at Princeton University.

Please note:

Following the talk, you may ask Jan-Werner Müller your questions online. If you prefer to do so even before the lecture, you can write us an e-mail at event@amerikahaus.de – just include “Question for Jan-Werner Müller” in the subject line.
