The Bavarian American Academy
The Bavarian American Academy (BAA), founded in 1998, provides a scholarly network for researchers working on North America and inter-American relations in the fields of cultural studies and the social sciences. The BAA organizes annual conferences and summer schools, sponsors regional symposia and lectures, awards postgraduate fellowships, and fosters knowledge transfer.
Although the primary focus of the Academy‘s activities is the USA, in the context of interdisciplinary and interregional studies it also supports research on Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean.
Leibniz Prize 2018 awarded to our director Prof. Dr. Heike Paul
We cordially congratulate BAA director Prof. Dr. Heike Paul on being awarded the 2018 Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize. The prize is the most important research award in Germany, and is endowed with €2.5 million. Established in 1985, it aims to improve the working conditions of outstanding researchers, expand their research opportunities, relieve them of administrative tasks, and help them to establish new research formats.
Professor Paul holds the chair for American Studies, with a focus on North American literary and cultural studies, at the Friedrich-Alexander University of Nuremberg-Erlangen since 2004 and is one of the most renowned representatives of American Studies in Germany. The prize not only honors her scholarly achievements, but also her high international renown and her exceptional role as a transatlantic networker.
Prof. Dr. Heike Paul, executive board member of the BAA since 2007, was elected as executive director in 2013 and has served as director since 2017.
