Film Screening "The YouTube Effect"
Film and event descriptions
This event will take place in Amerikahaus. Digital participation is not possible.
The ubiquitous video sharing platform YouTube plays a large role in many people's lives, especially young people's. From the dream of becoming a successful content creator on the platform, searching for information in any subject, to doomscrolling through shorts at 2 a.m., the platform offers a wide variety of uses and contents.
The success and longevity of YouTube, however, has not always been a certainty. How did it gain such success, and how has its success shaped today's world? How does a platform for video sharing give way to conspiracy theorists, and how do they monitor contents and channels?
In the 2022 documentary The YouTube Effect, director Alex Winter investigates not only the origins of the platform's ultimate success, but also the power and influence it has on society—both the positive and the negative sides. On Thursday, November 30, 2023, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., school classes and individuals have the chance to view the film and reflect on its contents at Amerikahaus.
This film screening is free for students and teachers at Bavarian schools. Participation is encouraged for the "Oberstufe" and motivated English learners in grades 10 through 13 of any school form. It should be noted that the film was created for audiences who are native speakers of English, and it will be shown with subtitles.
