U.S.-Latin America Relations in Election Year 2024 (CANCELLED)

Friday, July 19, 2024, 4 p.m.

November 2024 marks the date for the next U.S. elections. President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump will be the contenders in a conflicted scenario for the country. The current wars in Ukraine and the Middle East and the country's relationship with China are just a few examples that charactarize the complex situation of international relations in the United States. With this in mind, another important factor that will influence the electoral decision are the relations with Latin America.
Both Republicans and Democrats are aware of the importance of the „voto latino“ during the presidential election. Therefore, topics such as migration, resources, and drug and human trafficking are prominent issues on the U.S.-American political agenda and will shape the outcome of the upcoming elections. This panel discussion will address, among others, the following questions: How have Latin American relations with the U.S. evolved during the last two administrations? What are the expected strategies of both candidates to secure the „voto latino,“ and how might this shape the relationship between the U.S. and Latin American going forward?

The panel will consist of two Latin American scholars who have worked closely on the topic.
