Vortrag
Ayn Rand – Objektivismus als Freiheitslehre
Unkostenbeitrag: € 3 inkl.

Author Reading and Wine-Tasting
Reading with Layne Coleman
Tickets: € 8
Location: BeMe Theatre at the EINSTEIN Kulturzentrum, Einsteinstraße 42

Canadian writer, director, and actor Layne Coleman will read from his memoir Desire. Both seductive and hilarious, Desire chronicles a life begun on a Christian fundamentalist farm in Saskatchewan, Canada, as the youngest of seven children, then nine years spent in a prairie bible school and finally his escape to a life in the theatre, where he meets… Carole. Heartbreakingly honest and irreverently humorous, Desire is its own kind of love story.

There will be a wine-tasting before the reading courtesy of WineDelight where you will get to sample various wines from Canadian wineries with the opportunity to purchase those you enjoyed most. After the reading, there will be music provided by Canadian actor and musical theatre star, Frank Moore. The bar will be open and you can meet and talk to the author.

Layne Coleman is a former artistic director of Theatre Passe Muraille, Canada's oldest alternative theatre. He is the recipient of three lifetime achievement awards for his contribution to the arts and lives in Toronto, Ontario. Coleman is the director of the current BeMe Theatre production My Zinc Bed by David Hare which runs through March 27th at the EINSTEIN Kulturzentrum. More info at www.BeMeTheatre.com.

“The Picture of Dorian Gray” by Oscar Wilde

His sins and the passing of his youth are transferred to a portrait painted by a besotted artist. Eventually Dorian destroys all those who love him and in despair attacks his own portrait. This revival of Paul Stebbings’ highly successful dramatisation combines Gothic horror story with a searching psychological thriller, while live music enhances the action.

Political Humor in American Society
Fee: € 10; registration: 089 55 25 37-20 or bibliothek@amerikahaus.de

Speaker: Dr. Markus Hünemörder, LMU München

This seminar will explore political humor in U.S. society from the American Revolution to the present day. It will focus on political cartoons, e.g. those of Thomas Nast (who invented the modern political cartoon in the 1870s), Gary Trudeau (whose daily strip Doonesbury helped define American politics in the 1970s), and Tom Toles (the Washington Post’s present lead cartoonist). The course will also look at the political dimensions of modern animated TV programs like The Simpsons, Family Guy, American Dad, and South Park. In all cases, we will look at the historical and political context of the cartoons and also ask what role political humor can play in the realm of politics itself. There will be lots of graphic material for possible classroom use.

Lecture
The American Family: Two Centuries of Change
Admission free

The changing perception of the American family reflects how Americans perceive themselves, their nation, and the world. The changing roles of men, women, and children within the family circle have had a major impact on public policy, the economy, and on race and gender relations. What are these changes? Why have they occurred? Are we ready for a new definition of what constitutes a family?

David Goldfield is the Robert Lee Professor of History at University of North Carolina. He has been the Editor for the Sage Journal of Urban History for several years and has authored numerous books, of which two were nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. Teacher Training Seminar
Youth Subcultures in the USA
Fee: € 10; registration: 089 55 25 37-20 or bibliothek@amerikahaus.de

Speaker: Wolf Seiler, M.A., LMU München

The idea of youth and adolescence as separate stages of life was invented in the late nineteenth century in the wake of industrialization and urbanization. It became prominent as a social and cultural phenomenon after World War II. Media and marketing agencies in the prospering Western societies quickly discovered teenagers and their newly gained spending power as consumers. Self-conscious of their new status, young people soon cultivated different styles, musical tastes, and oppositional ideas, and organized in distinct youth subcultures.
Participation in those subcultures provided youth with an identity outside that of social institutions such as family, school, or work, and an opportunity to define themselves against the mainstream.

This seminar will provide an introduction to the concept of youth subculture and some of its basic theoretical assumptions. We will take a closer look at a variety of historical and contemporary American youth subcultures such as Gangs, the Beat Generation, Hip Hop, or Punk. They will not only be placed within their respective historical contexts, but we will also touch upon issues such as race, class, gender, identity, resistance, and commercialization.

Mark Twain Today
Admission free

The year 2010 marks the 175th anniversary of Mark Twain's birth (November 20, 1835) and the 100th anniversary of his death (April 21, 1910). One of the leading scholars on Twain, Gary Scharnhorst, will discuss Mark Twain as a modern author and will explain his continuing relevance. Twain’s humor contributes to this continuing readability and his analytical comments on race and imperialism seem as relevant today as they were in the late 19th and early 20th century.

Gary Scharnhorst is Distinguished Professor of English at the University of New Mexico, and author or editor of 35 books, including Mark Twain: The Complete Interviews (2007). He is editor of the scholarly journal American Literary Realism and has received five Fulbright teaching awards that brought him to Germany.

California - Vortrag
Vom Goldrausch zum Governator - eine kleine Geschichte Kaliforniens
Eintritt frei
