Exclusive Film Preview of "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri"

It won four Golden Globes, including Best Picture, and rumor has it that it is one of the hottest contenders for the 2018 Academy Awards: the movie Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

Thanks to a cooperation with Twentieth Century Fox and the HFF München, we were able to show an exclusive preview of this darkly comedic drama on Sunday, January 14, 2018.

The screening was free and about 250 people were eager to watch the original version with German subtitles at the AudimaxX Theater at the HFF. Prof. Dr. Heike Paul, director of our Bavarian American Academy, welcomed everyone before Tim Moeck from the Dept. VI – Screenplay at the HFF München introduced the movie. He had already seen the film at the Venice Film Festival a few months earlier and shared his personal and professional impressions – without any spoilers, of course.

The film was written and directed by Academy Award winner Martin McDonagh and focuses on Mildred Hayes (Frances McDormand) whose daughter was murdered. After months passed without an arrest in her daughter’s case, Mildred Hayes takes matters into her own hands, commissioning three signs leading into her town with a controversial message directed at the town's revered chief of police Willoughby (Woody Harrelson). From day to day, Mildred fights the battle for her murdered child using her wits as a weapon.

The film focuses on the showdown between this relentless mother and Ebbing’s law enforcement, which brings a lot of drama and tension to the small town. Donagh gives his female leading part the chance to be in a position that was long reserved for men in classic westerns: the lone hero, who fights for his rights and stands off against a town.

Since the day of the screening was also the final day of our exhibition “unitedstates pt.2” with photographs by Mark Steinmetz, many people in the audience seized the opportunity and visited it after the end credits. The HFF is conveniently located only two doors down from our very own exhibition rooms.

Thank you to everyone who attended the film preview and another big thanks to our cooperation partners!

PS: If you missed the film preview and want to watch it on the big screen, the official release date of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri in Germany is Thursday, January 25, 2018.
