Library The library holds an extensive inventory of English-language books, magazines, journals, videos and DVDs on contemporary issues in the United States and Canada. You can also research current magazine and newspaper databanks using its modern computer facility. The trained staff can help you find what you are looking for, and you can even request that the information you need be compiled and sent directly to your home through the library’s Research Center. Lectures and Seminars The Amerika Haus Library organizes professional training for English teachers from Bavarian schools. Highly qualified academic lecturers are providing information on selected subjects in the area of American and Canadian history, politics and culture. Teacher Seminars 2009
This program addresses students with the purpose of providing a closer understanding of American culture through amusing and entertaining lectures. Educational Material for Teachers The ‘Lehrplan-Packages‘ provide teachers at Bavarian schools with relevant background material on American and Canadian subjects with the purpose of allowing a deeper analysis of North-American culture in class. The ‘Lehreraufsatzdienst’ introduces fifteen selected newspaper or magazine articles on contemporary issues to English teachers. These materials are supposed to allow a better preparation of American and Canadian topics in school. The ‘Lehreraufsatzdienst’ is released three times a year. Research This service addresses users who do not have the opportunity to do research by themselves at the Amerika Haus Library. Our staff is researching relevant material on a given subject in the area of American and Canadian studies. Especially high school and college students who are working on seminar papers will benefit from this service. The package comes at a price of 18.-€ and will be sent via mail. The Amerika Haus Library conducts a detailed research of company addresses in the United States and Canada for you. The addresses can be sorted according to state or province, branch and size. The first 10 addresses come at the prize of 5.-€, every further address is 0,30ct. Collections and Sources The Amerika Haus Library contains more than 10000 textbooks and encyclopaedias in the area of American and Canadian Studies. These books are for reference only. Wireless-LAN and a copier can be used in our reading room. A limited amount of books is available for loan for four weeks (mostly novels). If you want to check out a book, you have to bring a valid passport with you. You can check out no more than three books at the same time. Online databases offer access to a vast amount of sources (e.g. magazines, newspapers, etc.) in comparatively little time. You will find information on a broad spectrum of subjects. Our staff will help you with any occurring problems during your research in our databases (link). Our collection of videotapes and DVDs is tailored to the needs of high school and college students. We have both documentaries as well as movies on American and Canadian subjects. Students and teachers can check out DVDs and videos for one week. All other users are welcome to watch the movies in the library. Besides online databases, the Amerika Haus offers print editions of approximately 40 newspapers and magazines to read in our library. We offer pamphlets which give you an insight into the mainstream of American Politics and culture. These sources proved to be helpful for exam preparation for high school and college students. The price is between 2.- to 4.-€ per brochure. |
