The State of Human Rights

International Conference / Free admission / Registration required

18th international annual conference of the Bavarian American Academy (BAA)

Since their proclamation in the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights, human rights have become a dominant language in controversies over ethics around the globe and a normative basis for concepts of a just society. This concerns a variety of issues and grievances – slavery and warfare, fights over indigenous rights, and conflicts over asylum law and the status of refugees.

The doctrine of human rights has been highly influential, both for states as well as for non-governmental organizations. The idea and concept of human rights that we know today gained momentum during the second half of the 20th century. Human rights discourses operate internationally and claim universality – while the Eurocentric bias of a Western conception of human rights continues to be critically discussed.

This conference offers perspectives from literary and cultural studies, history, political science, philosophy, sociology, and law, looking at historical controversies as well as at its current state in a transnational political and cultural arena. Panels will identify periods and contexts in which human rights and humanitarianism emerged as part of political reasoning and public discourse. Overall, the conference takes on a broad comparative perspective, including the Americas, Europe, and Australia, for an examination of a global human rights discourse.
